Just a few days after the new series premiere, RadioShack has announced that it scored exclusive rights to sell Mio's Knight Rider GPS in the US. I already have a GPS unit, but the geek in me wants to buy this thing just to hear William Daniels tell me where the nearest McDonald's is. The KITT GPS is available now for $270. There are plenty of dual-hard-drive outboard storage systems on the market, but SimpleTech's Duo Pro struck me as particularly brimming with awesomeness. It's not a NAS—it's totally local—but you have a choice of USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and 800, and eSATA, which clocks a max transfer speed of 3Gb per second. (That's gigabits, not gigabytes.) You can naturally do RAID 0 or 1, and though the current options are a 1TB total for $280, a 1.5TB total for $420 and a 2TB version for $550, you will be able to choose a 3TB config when the winter winds start to blow. Have a look at the back of this in the photo below the jump. [SimpleTech]

3M's new Mobile ID Reader scans MRZ and RF chip data from passports and visas and immediately checks them against local or international watch lists by using wifi or GSM/GPRS EDGE networks. It seems like a great tool to further make you feel like you're living in some scary dystopian sci-fi novel, especially when you hear that dastardly monopolist Bill Gates got his little-loved Windows Mobile 6 OS onto the device.
The Mobile ID Reader boasts an 8GB capacity, so when hackers crack the “encrypted formats feature,” they'll have access to tons of personal and privileged data. Other features include a sunlight-safe touchscreen and a capacitive fingerprint sensor. The device is meant to be used by authorities at event checkpoints, like its first tryout at the Euro Cup 2008 soccer tournament, but it shouldn't be long before you see it at your local Trader Joe's, checking up on the hippies. OpticronES80 GA ED Angled, HDF 20-60x Zoom, FREE Green Stay-on Case, FREE Birder's Tripod

Latest model ES80 GA with ED objective lens loaded with free accessories
2006 series ES fieldscopes are designed to build on the success of previous models, delivering best in class optical performance wrapped up in a brand new tactile rubber body. This package also includes the new (Sept 2006) green stay on case with the wide band neoprene shoulder strap.2006 Modifications include:A 100% new body produced in magnesium, aluminium and polycarbonate protected in textured, tactile, natural rubber armour. Application of Opticron F-type multi-coating to enhance colour contrast and apparent definition. Nitrogen waterproofing to eliminate potential problems of condensation and dust.Available in three variants; 80mm SD, 80mm ED and 100mm ED, the instruments excel in the most important area for the majority of users: image quality. The reduction of almost all visible chromatic aberration at 60x magnification with the 80 SD sets the standard for both definition and tonal quality, further improved upon with the 80 ED and 100 ED.Weight is kept to a minimum and the 'scopes are well balanced for effective use on a tripod. Other features include a retractable lens hood, integrated rubber objective lens cover, conveniently positioned wide band focusing wheel and rotating tripod sleeve to enable maximum versatility in hides, car windows or viewing from a sitting or prone position. Fully compatible with SDL, HDF and HR eyepieces to offer an exciting array of viewing options of 20x to 100x (80mm) and 30x to 134x (100). The 2.5x UTA is available for even greater magnification. Each model can also be converted for use with SLR cameras for telephotography and are supplied complete with a comprehensive 30 year guarantee.Staff at SW Optics have tested and compared this best seller to other popular German and Austrian brands at twice the price and to be honest, there's very little difference! Coupled with the new SDF Super Zoom or the new HDF Zoom, you will be pleasantly surprised. We used the HDF on max power of 60x, and detected no aberration or colour fringing at all. The edge to edge sharpness was impressive and there was no bending of vertical uprights at the edges at all. At 60x magnification, the scope held its clarity and contrast and showed no signs of becoming grainy or misty. The new tactile rubber armouring is a joy to hold and use.In summary, a bargain. The purchase of this package also entitles you to one free years membership of the BTO.

LeicaAPO Televid HD 82 Angled with 25-50xWW Zoom and Stay on Case

Pre release orders only for the new Leica Apo Televid scope qualify for a FREE Leica stay on case
All new APO Televid HD 82 and 65 due for release late Autumn 2008, probably now November 2008. Leica Camera UK will be at The British Birdwatching Fair in August 2008 exhibiting the new, fully redesigned spotting scopes with two different lens diameters - the Leica APO Televid HD 82 and the compact Leica APO Televid HD 65. Initial stocks are expected to be available for sale end of September 2008. However, expect demand to be high and stock limited. The optical performance of the new Leica Televid spotting scopes is significantly increased in comparison to preceding models in the Leica Televid product line. The use of high-quality Leica lenses made of special fluoride glass gives an improved range of contrast and neutral colour to provide sharpness and brilliance right up to the edge of the image. The 82 and 65 models will include an APO HD version and a standard HD version in both straight and angled. Needless to say, the APO HD will be the most desirable. Prices for these models have yet to be announced (as at Sept 07) though expect to revisit your mortgage. A completely revised new zoom eye piece with a wide angle is also to be launched at the same time. Along with a new 30xWW eye piece, the zoom will no doubt be the most popular accessory.Further new details are below:AquaDura coating:The intricate high-performance lens is now incorporated into a compact, robust and fully rubber-armoured die-cast magnesium housing, providing the best possible protection. The Leica AquaDura coating technology used for the first time on the external glass surfaces of all new models means that any rain or condensation that falls on the external glass surfaces simply drip cleanly away from the lens. Moreover, it is easier to remove finger prints and dirt, so the spotting scopes can be used to the best possible effect even with bad weather. Close Focus:With their excellent close-up ranges - 3.2 meters for the Leica Televid 65 and 3.9 meters for the Leica Televid 82 - they are at the top of their class, allowing very detailed observation of tiny objects such as butterflies or insects.Apo & HD models:Each of the Leica Televid 82 and 65 spotting scopes is available in four versions. Each range includes an Apo and an HD model, each of which is available with an angled sight as well as a straight sight. The Apo models of the Leica Apo-Televid 82 and Leica Apo-Televid 65 with the redesigned apochromatic lenses make for an even better viewing experience, providing increased sharpness, greater contrast, and the most natural colour reproduction. Thanks to the use of special glass containing fluoride, the redesigned High Definition Lens (HD) on both spotting scopes - Leica Televid 82 HD and Leica Televid 65 HD - means that users can obtain images with no colour fringe and with excellent contrast from dawn to twilight. Leica Vario 25-50x WW ASPH. wide angle eye piece:The Leica quick-change bayonet with integral lock means that it is possible to use the extensive range of Leica wide-angle and zoom lenses on all Televid 82 and Televid 65 spotting scopes. With the full redesign, the focal length of the lens is now independent of the spotting scope used, so is identical for all spotting scopes. The Leica Vario 25-50x WW aspheric wide angle eye-piece is now part of the program. With its large, wide-angled range of vision it offers a unique viewing experience at any magnification setting. All Leica eyepieces are resistant to dust and water-pressure-tight to a depth of five meters. The ergonomic rubber elements and the rotating eye cup ensure total comfort while observing - even for eyeglass wearers. (Note: existing Televid 77 eye pieces are apparently not compatible with the 82 series).Watertight nitrogen-filled housing:The new generation Leica Televid spotting scopes have a nitrogen-filled housing, are watertight to a depth of five meters, and the full rubber armouring protects the spotting scopes from scratching and damage. All Televid models are guaranteed to function completely at temperatures between - 25 and + 55 Celsius. Lens hood & Tripod heads:Leica Televid spotting scopes are designed to be particularly ergonomic and user-friendly. The Leica dual focusing facility with rubber focusing wheels makes for accurate fine adjustment, so that even the tiniest details can be brought into focus. A silent telescoping lens hood with filter attachment thread and integral sight ensures low levels of stray light while viewing. With the Televid’s newly designed tripod foot it is easy to engage the spotting scopes either horizontally or vertically into the quick-change system on the Manfrotto tripod heads. However the well-known 4/3” attachment thread with locking device is also available for other quick-range plates. An ergonomic locking screw ensures that the tripod foot can rotate 360o on all models. This means that the spotting scope can be aligned to the best effect in any observation situation. Leica Televid 82 and 65 supplied with Leica eyepiece:The new Leica Televid spotting scopes will be supplied as a set with a Leica eye-piece. This means that the Leica Televid HD models can be obtained with the high-magnification Leica Vario 20-60 x eyepiece, and the Leica Apo-Televid HD models with the new wide angle Leica Vario 25-50x WW ASPH. eyepiece. Can't wait!

The generally small size means they can be placed in a bag or even the pocket. This zoom compact from Opticron is one of the better zooms that we have seen through, offering nice and clear, contrasty images right through the magnification range. As with all zoom binos, field of view and light diminish as you move up the power scale.
